How to Register Your Address in Germany

How to Register Your Address (Anmeldung) in Germany – Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re new to Germany, Anmeldung is one of the first (and most important) things you need to do.

Anmeldung simply means registering your address with the local authorities. You’ll need it for everything — from opening a bank account and getting a SIM card to applying for a residence permit.

Here's your beginner-friendly, step-by-step guide to completing your Anmeldung — stress-free!

 What Is Anmeldung?

Anmeldung is the mandatory registration of your residence in Germany. By law, you must register within 14 days of moving into a new home.

Where Do You Register?

At your local Bürgeramt (citizen’s office) or Einwohnermeldeamt .

  • In Frankfurt, search for “Bürgeramt Frankfurt” and find the one closest to your district
  • Appointments are often required — book online early!

What Documents Do You Need?

Make sure to bring:

  • Valid Passport or National ID
  • Wohnungsgeberbestätigung – confirmation from your landlord that you’ve moved in
  • Completed Anmeldung Form (can be downloaded online)
  • Visa or residence permit (if applicable)

What Is a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung?

This is a signed document from your landlord confirming that you live at the address. You cannot register without it.

Make sure your landlord includes:

  • Their name and address
  • Your full name
  • Exact move-in date
  • Signature and date

What Happens During the Appointment?

  • Arrive early and bring all documents
  • The process takes ~10–15 minutes
  • You'll get your Anmeldebestätigung (registration certificate) — keep it safe!

Why Is It So Important?

You’ll need your Anmeldebestätigung for:

  • Opening a bank account
  • Signing up for health insurance
  • Getting a SIM card
  • Enrolling in university or language school
  • Receiving official mail and tax ID

Do You Get a Tax ID (Steuer-ID)?

Yes! After registering, your Steuer-ID will be sent to you by mail within 2–3 weeks.

Tips for a Smooth Anmeldung

  • Book your appointment as early as possible (slots fill up quickly!)
  • Print and fill out forms in advance
  • Double check your name spelling and birthdate during the appointment
  • If your German isn’t strong, bring a friend or ask if they speak English
